Funeral and Memorial Services

The sound of a hymn played on the Great Highland pipes has become associated with funerals and memorial services.  Perhaps it’s the ancient non-western scale of the instrument, or the soulful haunting sound it makes.

Consider some of these options:

Having the pipes play outside the ceremonial location as the procession arrives or leaves.

• Play during the service at a specified point.
• Play at the grave site as the procession arrives.
• Play at a designated time during the graveside service.
• Piping as the guests depart the service.

Having a piper located a short distance away can be very effective, but does require the piper be cued.

Please bear in mind that outdoor piping can sound less than optimal when temperatures drop into the 40’s.

Traditional highland attire is standard for a dignified appearance.

A selection of appropriate tunes would consist of slow airs, slow marches and laments out of respect for the solemnity of the occasion.  These might include:
